Our senses of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell connect us to the world. If you actually pause for a moment and really think about the miracle of our senses, you will be blown away by their power and importance. While I am so incredibly blessed and grateful for the ability to enjoy all of my senses, there are two that particularly have sentimental value for me during this time of year. Sound…and smell… One of my earliest and most profound memories of the Holiday Season is centered around sound. I assume I was around 5 years old, but I honestly am not sure. I was at my Meema’s house, which is where my family always gathered. After all the food was eaten, and all the presents opened, I snuggled up on the couch and closed my eyes. As I lay there, the sound of merriment, laughter, dishes, and Christmas carols drifted in through my ears and firmly planted itself in my memory. Still today, when I hear a certain Christmas carol or am with family and that familiar hum of laughter, conversation and love fills the room, I am taken back to that childhood memory and find myself wanting to curl up on the nearest sofa and just bask in its warm comfort. The other profound memories – and I think many of you will agree with me here – are tied to my sense of smell. Walking into a home filled with the smell of a turkey dinner cooking…even as a vegetarian I can still appreciate this aroma – its the aroma of food cooked with that special ingredient called LOVE. A certain perfume or cologne…can instantly take you back to a hug between a father and daughter. The smell of your childhood dance studio, gymnastics gym, martial arts dojo, piano lesson, etc. No matter what it smelled like, it was familiar and it was like home, and whenever it greets your nose again, you are taken back to all the wonderful memories that it provided you. Because of these powerful experiences, for me, sound and smell are most important for me during the Holiday Season. As someone who does not set up a Christmas tree for various reasons, I rely on music and essential oils to fill my home with Holiday cheer!
